In San Diego, you can have two ADUs built on your property: one main ADU and one junior ADU. 

Which ADU House Plan Is Right For You?

Each homeowner has different needs and reasons for building an ADU. Which ADU house plan is right for you depends on many factors, including your location in San Diego County, the size of your primary residence, and more. Regulations differ throughout the County, but for the most part, ADUs will add value to your property; they can always be rented but not sold separately from your main home. You can rent both the main house and the ADU out, but some restrictions may apply if you live in the County.

How Big Can An ADU In 2020 Be?

According to the County of San Diego Planning & Development Services, “An ADU attached to a primary dwelling may be up to 50% of the single-family residence size, up to a maximum of 1,200 square feet.” However, a detached ADU may be up to 1,200 square feet, regardless of the single-family residence size.
