So, you’ve finalized your remodeling plans, signed the contract and picked a start date. It’s time to get the project going. But, you and the remodeling contractor should have one more pre-construction meeting at least one week before the installation date to iron out small details. The following are some of the things you should discuss:
- Working Hours and Days – Most contractors follow standard work hours, which will be clearly indicated in the contract. The hours may differ depending on several factors, such as the scope of the project, whether the house will be occupied at the time and if you’re both amenable to weekends.
- Parking and Trash – Ask the contractor how much parking space they will need, so you’ll have ample time to clear the driveway. If it requires additional parking, it generally is a good idea to coordinate with neighbors as some neighbors can get territorial about their parking spots. Permits may also be needed. Trash management should be discussed as well; inform the contractor where they can temporarily place the trash and whether they will take care of trash disposal.
- Exchange Contact Information – Exchange contact information with the team leader or whoever the designated remodeling services contact is. This is especially important if you won’t be on-site and in case quick decisions have to be made. In addition to phone numbers, exchange email addresses or messenger usernames in case you need to exchange photos or documents or make video calls. If you wish to receive regular end-of-the-day progress reports, inform the contractor of this.
- Property and Landscape Protection – Professional contractors take measures to ensure that the parts that will be remodeled are the only ones that will be modified. During this meeting, take the contractor representative for a walk around the house, and let them know which areas will need to be protected, such as landscaping. You will also need to designate areas for lunch and bathroom breaks, and a staging area for equipment and supplies.
